though the choice of director may surprise many Taiwanese director Angly , (The wedding
Banguet, Eat drink man women) turns out to be the correct choice . His sensibilityies are compatible with the authors .

Both artist employ domestic life as a microcosm for society at lorge . Another interesting aspect is that the screenplay by actress emma thompson ( who also stars in the movie ) is her first attempt , and a remarkableone at that .

As story begins , Mrs Dashwood (Gemma jones ) is Widowed , and according to law , her huge estate goes back to the oldest son by a previos marriage . so when the son and his wife fanny move in , Mrs Dashwood and three daughters and forced move out .
